One shortfall of sharing items in Google Reader is that you can only share items from feeds you are subscribed to, or, items that have shown up in your feed due to a friend sharing it. If you come across an interesting story you want to share while browsing the Web, you’re out of luck – or, so I thought.

The other day Corvida at SheGeeks posted about a bookmarklet (that apparently has been around for a few months and available here) that functions much like trying to bookmark something on Del.icio.us. Here’s an example of how it works: after reading a story my mom sent me this morning about bloggers being paid based on page views (thanks for looking out for my career, mom!), I clicked the bookmarklet, which then brings me into the Google Reader interface, where that item is open. From there, I click “expanded view,” which then gives me the full options of Google Reader. Then, just click “Share” and the item is added to my link blog and shared with my contacts!

It’s a small feature, but it makes sharing in Google Reader much more comparable to other types of social news services like Digg and Delicious that let you submit content from any web page. Share on!
